Last month’s Mac Demarco concert-turned-debauchery can be synthesized into three simple words: full frontal nudity. Let those words seep in. Let them take hold of you like the astounding psych rock that Demarco and company put on display in the hour-long “event” at The Hoxton. You know, I have trouble dubbing this performance with the heavily industrialized “concert” term because it overflowed with absolute “I don’t give a f***” mentality and yet, delivered the goods all the same. Whether it was the rollicking hailing of the cigarettes in ‘Ode to Viceroy’ or the more romanticized honesty of ‘Still Together’, the group offered room to let loose, let go and not care about the crappy sound system. Add some stage diving, actual full frontal nudity from Demarco’s on-stage entourage and some hilarious renditions of ‘Blackbird’ and Bachman Turner Overdrive’s “Takin’ Care of Business” and you’ve got a cocktail of the nastiest variety. A drink I’d have any day of the week.
